Freebirds' burritos are the definition of catastrophically terrible.

We've had Freebirds in Austin for a long time. Also there are plenty of good burritos in Austin! Also the Freebirds near me is kind of weird about serving beer - they only have like 2 or 3 cans of Bud Light or Tecate in a little minifridge and look at you grudgingly if you try to order it.

So true, hahah

Nothing beats a real Mexican restaurant (or probably home cooking, if you have access to it...). The best burrito I've ever had in my entire life was years ago at this tiny little "hole-in-the-wall" type restaurant in Arizona. It was a family-owned joint and if I remember correctly, majority of the menu was in Spanish so I had to ask my dad (who knows a little bit of Spanish) what everything was, and I ordered by basically pointing at the menu. The thing was the size of my face but somehow I think I managed to eat all of it.

funny thing is, if you go to Guadalajara, Monterrey, Mexico DF, anywhere beyond a border town,, you will never see a burrito on a menu. Nobody has a clue what they are. Along with the little "battle at the bakery " aka Cinco de Mayo.. nobody celebrates this day in Mexico really except the town of Puebla :] T

he burrito was invented in El Paso TX and is a fundamental, and extremely delicious Tex-Mex item. Fuckin MMMMMMM!!! I want one nooow. But also a #2 at Whataburger lol :]

I kind of like how they are careful to make them perfectly cylindrical; makes it easy to eat.

But... we already HAD Freebirds in Austin... I don't think it changes much that their HQ is moving here, does it?

quite awful. And the last time I went in there the staff were visible disgusted when someone walked in the door.

At least it's something, right? Sadly I've found Texan Mexican to be sorely lacking, so this is probably a relief to many. God, that sounds so wet-blankety. Anyway, if you like it, have at it I say.

Kinja'd!!!

Anything that isn't covered in green chili like you see here isn't any good anyhow.

You forgot the queso. It changes everything.

Still, I generally prefer Chipotle for the brown rice availability. And because it's cheaper.

The queso isn't bad, but we're talking about Texas, and Austin in particular: better queso, burritos, and tacos are available within 3 blocks of any Chipotle or Freebirds.

Yeah...I tried Freebirds...it was terrible. I'll stick to the homegrown Mexican/Hispanic restaurants.

Since moving to Utah I have grown to hate burritos. There's nothing special about them!! Let's get a giant tortilla and fill it with the menu. :| Where's the artfulness or simplicity? The perfect combination of eggs, beans, bacon, and salsa?

Also, rice is not filler! It's not junk. It's freaking delicious and takes hard work to master.

Now I want to go home, roll out some tortillas, cook some rice, carne guisada and stuff myself.

That is hardly even Mexican too. More New Mexican. The green chili they get down in Mexico are verdolagas I think. Hard to find up here.

Yeah, I'll go one further... it's Coloradan. Anywhere south of Pueblo ceases to recognize green chili and thinks you just mean green chile and will pile strips of Hatch chiles on your burger or offer to make a stew with chiles as one ingredient, but that sort of sauce is kinda alien to them.

I don't try to get into what's Mexican and what isn't though. That's just splitting hairs. The entirety of our West was Mexico.

I'm a Canadian, I spend a few weeks travelling in Mexico every winter, so I feel confident in saying:

DAFUK is that?! It looks like rolled up tortillas covered in pea soup, not anything you'd find in Mexico!

...how did I not see this earlier? There are many better burritos than Freebirds here already, plus we have a bunch of Freebirdses. This was just their HQ moving where it belongs, and that HQ needs to sponsor a nice local 944 race car with free burritos. (Please?)
